The language of colors

The language of colors

When you send someone flowers, you are generally trying to tell them something: “I love you,” “I support you,” “I celebrate with you.” But did you realize that the color of flowers you choose can reinforce or clash with that message? Here are a few tips and choices on how to boost your intention with the language of colors you choose for flowers.

Red is one of the most common picks. Generally, red is thought of in the romantic sense; red roses are arguably the most popular choice each Valentine’s Day. But this classic color can also represent courage, desire, and respect. If you’re in the market for red but want something a bit less traditional than roses, try tulips, carnations, or even gerbera daisies!

Yellow is another top color in the floral industry. Bright yellow blooms generally make us think of sunshine, happiness, and joy. They also represent positive energy and friendship. If you’re searching for the perfect yellow blooms, consider mini calla lilies, sunflowers, or daffodils (when in season) with pretty yarrow accents.

Pink is close on the heels of red as the color of love. It’s a popular choice for Mother’s Day, as well, because pink also represents femininity, gentleness, and happiness. Some great choices for the perfect pink bouquet would be Asiatic lilies, alstroemeria, Lisianthus, zinnias, and snapdragons.

White flowers, ironically, are a favorite at both weddings and memorial services. White symbolizes innocence, purity, and sympathy. Roses and carnations are very common in white but more unique flowers are dendrobium orchids, stock, hydrangeas, and anemones That lists just a few options for lovely white blooms because most flowers come in shades of white.

There are, of course, many other hues with special significance. Whether you’re in the market for one of the colors we discussed or something a bit more off the common path like orange, blue, purple, or green, be sure to talk with your Lilygrass floral designer about what the colors symbolize and ask about a few of the options in our fresh floral coolers.
