Making some New Year’s resolutions? If you’re not quite sure what to put on your list, consider self-care. We are all so used to caring for others but often feel guilty for taking time to care for ourselves. It’s okay to treat yourself! In fact, it’s good for your emotional, mental, and physical health. Here are a few ways you can spend a little time on self-care in the new year.
Flowers of course! If you love a fresh bouquet of flowers and no one else gets them for you, get them for yourself! They add a flash of color that can help lift your spirits. Beautiful, fragrant flowers trigger multiple senses, primarily our sense of smell. Human noses contain over 1,000 smell receptors, while our eyes only contain four light receptors. Our sense of smell enables us to experience life in a more visceral way, which is why the smell of flowers puts us in a good mood and decreases anxiety and stress.
House plants are another great self-care option, and we have a large selection of green plants available and blooming plants if you want a win/win with green and flowers. They can last for years with proper care, and there are proven mental health benefits to house plants.
Another great way to pamper yourself is with items like local, handmade bath salts, body butters, and soaps. They’re generally higher in quality than mass-produced items, and they come in a wide variety of fragrances. A good soak in a warm bath not only soothes aches and pains but also improves emotional and mental health. If you need to unwind at the end of the day, lock the bathroom door and enjoy a warm bath with your favorite bath salts and soaps. You’ll feel like a new person when you’re done.
Hand creams and lip balms should be a staple in our daily lives, especially during the winter. Investing in some quality creams and balms will help keep your skin from getting dry and chapped. Keeping your skin soft and free of pain or irritation is a very important part of self-care.
Of course, we can’t forget the coffee (or tea). It’s important to take at least a few moments for yourself each day. If you’re a morning person, maybe your day just feels right when you start out with a good cup of hot coffee, tea, or cocoa. Don’t stop there though — pour that warm beverage into a fun mug to start your morning off right and bring a smile to your face. This may be even more important if you aren’t a morning person!
