Flower spotlight: black-eyed susan (rudbeckia)

Black-eyed Susans are a hardy little sibling in the sunflower family. They’re known by a variety of different names, such as brown-eyed susan, yellow ox-eye daisy, brown betty, golden Jerusalem, yellow daisy, poor-land daisy, gloriosa daisy, and English bull's eye. Several Native American tribes used black-eyed susan medicinally for centuries to treat snake bites, swelling, infection, colds, and the flu. They also ingested certain parts of the flower for nutritional purposes.

Growing in all 48 of the contiguous United States, these butterfly-loving blooms symbolize motivation and encouragement. They’re perfect for Get Well Soon bouquets and pair beautifully with daisies, white roses, and their sister sunflower. With stalks that grow up to three feet tall, they work in either short or tall arrangements and have become quite popular in wedding arrangements.

Yellow is a traditional fall color, so add some black-eyed susans to your Thanksgiving table and surrounding decor for a splash of happy color. Pair them with red roses, juniper greenery, dried twigs, and orange lilies in a harvest pumpkin or wicker cornucopia for the perfect holiday centerpiece. Mix dried herbs, black-eyed susans, and bold lily blooms, among the dinner platters, to add a special creative touch to your holiday table.

Though their bright yellow petals are more of a reminder of summer, black-eyed susans also work well in winter arrangements. White is the official color of winter, and yellow just so happens to be a beautiful pairing for all things white. Adding that pop of bright bold color to your winter floral arrangements will really make them stand out in a crowd.
