Flower Spotlight: Baby’s Breath

Flower Spotlight: Baby’s Breath

Gypsophila or more popularly known as, Baby’s Breath, has continued to regain popularity over the recent years. The plant is named for the small and delicate appearance of the flower, which some say resemble a gentle breath. Cut stems of the blooms give off a cottage garden aesthetic and can have a long lasting vase life with proper care.

Baby’s breath, as well as the greater Gypsophila genus, is native to North Africa, Europe and Asia. However, baby’s breath is now being grown all over North and South America. The plant is desirable for a number of reasons, but gardeners typically look to baby’s breath for their low maintenance, ability to attract pollinators, and its resistance to deer and rabbits. The blooms are very versatile and offer creative beauty to rock gardens, borders, cottage gardens and sometimes even ground cover.

The small clustered flowers of baby’s breath are often referred to as cloud-like and they give the plant a whimsical appearance. Because of this, baby's breath is a versatile flower in the floral design industry. It is often used as a filler or accent flower in floral arrangements, bouquets, corsages and more. The creamy white tones and delicate texture can be complementary to almost all flowers, without overpowering them.

If you’re going to a wedding anytime soon, you’ll probably see some baby’s breath tucked into bouquets and centerpieces. Some people say that baby’s breath blooms are the symbol of everlasting love, which is just one reason it has become so popular in wedding florals. The flower can also represent innocence and purity, making it the perfect addition to baby shower flowers or even just as a gift for the new mother herself.
