Five reasons to shop local this holiday season

The holiday shopping season is upon us, whether you’re celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or another winter holiday. The holiday season seems to get busier each and every year, and it may be tempting to sit down at the computer and simply do all your shopping online. But there’s significant value in shopping local for holiday presents.

  1. Reach out and touch someone… and something.

Local shops carry unique gift items that you probably won’t find online, some of which are handcrafted by local artists. It may take a little extra effort to visit a couple of stores, but finding that perfect gift for your best friend, mom, or spouse is worth it.

At a local shop, you can also see the gift items up close and personal. You can inspect the quality of craftsmanship, see the actual size, and feel the weight of the product. Ever ordered something online and been disappointed when it arrived because it wasn't what you expected based on the picture? No problem with that when you shop local!

  1. Tap into an extra brain (and heart) for your gift giving.

Struggling to find the right gift for a close friend or your spouse? Think of your local shop owner as a gift advisor ready and waiting to help. Maybe you have a few things in mind but can’t decide or maybe you don’t even know where to start. With a few questions and a little time wondering the store, that local shop owner can help you find a great gift.

  1. Keep more of your dollars in your community.

There are multiple economic studies that show what percentage of money spent at locally owned stores recirculates in the community versus money spent at retail chains. One such study from Civic Economics states that for every $100 spent at a local business, about $68 stays in the community compared to only $48 staying in the community for every $100 spent at a national chain.

Local sales tax dollars also help fund a wide range of municipal services, police and fire departments, street repairs and improvements, and other critical day-to-day operations of the city. Shopping local keeps more of your money in your community to support future growth, and it also helps provide jobs for local people.

  1. Support local nonprofits and community engagement while you shop.

Oklahoman people have a giving spirit, especially around the holidays. Many local businesses will donate a portion of their sales to a designated charity during the holiday season or even throughout the year.  Plus, local business owners are often very involved in community development efforts and volunteer opportunities to improve the community in which they live.

  1. Save on shipping and the hassle of delayed or lost packages.

When you shop local, there’s no shipping fee, and you don’t have to worry about the package getting lost or damaged in transit. No more wrapping a printed photo of a gift that didn't arrive on time! Even if you’re a last-minute shopper, you know that the present will be wrapped and ready for your celebration.
