Decorating cakes with flowers

What is the first thing you think about when you hear the word cake? Probably something like icing, dessert, sugar, yum, birthdays, or weddings. But what about flowers? 

Flowers have become a popular decor element in the dessert world, especially when it comes to elegant cakes for special occasions like weddings, events, and anniversaries. Carnations, chrysanthemums, cornflowers, freesia, gerbera daisies, lavender, peonies, Queen Anne's lace, roses, and sunflowers are all safe to use on cakes, and that is only the beginning of the list!

Not all flowers are safe and can be used on edible desserts, however, so be sure to do some research or ask one of our Lilygrass floral experts before your special event. Azaleas, calla lilies, daffodils, holly, hyacinth, hydrangea, lily of the valley, mistletoe, oleander, poinsettias, rhododendrons, sweet pea, and wisteria are just a few blooms that can be toxic and should not be used on anything that is going to be eaten.

Another thing to keep in mind when decorating a cake with flowers are dimensions. What is the size of your cake relative to the size of your preferred flowers? Do they work well together and maintain a balanced, aesthetically pleasing look? Does the overall look go with the theme and colors of your special event? Sometimes all you need is a simple, delicate touch with something like lavender or rose petals. If you are going for a more dramatic flair, some brightly colored asiatic lilies or gerbera daisies will do the trick.

The best advise, is to have some time of barrier between the cake and the flowers just in case there is any dirt or chemicals on the flowers from the growers.
