Advice for choosing wedding flowers

Advice for choosing wedding flowers

When it comes to wedding flowers, we’ve worked with a lot of couples with a wide range of preferences and budgets. We get asked a lot about floral trends for weddings, what the average wedding flower budget is, and so much more.

Here’s our basic advice for choosing wedding flowers.

Best advise Alicia Has: After everything is over- planning, wedding, and honeymoon.  The only thing you will have of the event is the professional pictures for years and years!  Make sure your photographer is amazing. Every picture that is taken, you will see your dress and the wedding flowers.  So, do not, I repeat, do not cut costs on photographer, wedding dress or flowers! When you are celebrating your 50th wedding anniversary, you do not want to regret your budget choices!

Choose what makes you happy

What’s our biggest piece of advice for any bride? Choose the flowers that make you happy.

If following the latest floral trends makes you happy, then go for it. We can certainly chat with you about the latest floral trends for weddings. If a simple bouquet makes you happy, we can keep it simple. If you want the same flowers your parents had at their wedding, we are glad to match the flowers to photos you bring. What you envision, we will make a reality for your wedding.

Consider colors and contrast

Do you want your bouquet to stand out in the spotlight, or do you want it to blend with the over all look? That’s an important question to ask yourself before choosing the color and type of flowers. A bouquet of vibrant orange and purple flowers will draw the eye more than a bouquet of subtle pastels or classic white, both in person and in photos.

The same question applies to bridesmaid bouquets, boutonnieres, and any floral arrangements for the ceremony location. When you meet with the florist, bring color swatches of dresses, ties, tablecloths, and other colors that will be used in the wedding. Depending on what level of contrast you want, your florist can help you decide what flowers are in that color palette.

Set a budget and stick to it

Wedding flowers don’t have to be expensive, but they can certainly add up. It’s a good idea to start with a general idea of your flower budget, but you may need to meet with a florist to get some idea of cost before you finalize the budget. Find a florist who will work with you to create your floral vision within your budget and help you identify lower-cost alternatives that can achieve a similar look if needed.

Always ask upfront if the flower shop has a minimum in cost or flowers that is required for wedding flowers. We don’t have a minimum at Lilygrass. We’re happy to work with you whether you want just a bridal bouquet or you need everything from the ceremony to the reception.
