WorldFinds

I hope your weekend was wonderful! It is starting to get hot finally. I hope you all have access to a pool!

Rather than writing about flowers, this week I want to talk about the gift items found in our shop. We carry a number of products in our shop, but I specifically want to talk with you about WorldFinds, an incredible company that helps tradeswomen receive fair wages and ethical treatment in other countries.

Their mission statement is simple: to create positive change, build hope, and design beautiful, sustainable products for a better world. Many of us have heard about the fair trade movement but don't really know what it means. Merriam-Webster defines fair trade as "a movement whose goal is to help producers in developing countries to get a fair price for their products so as to reduce poverty, provide for the ethical treatment of workers and farmers, and promote environmentally sustainable practices."

The company was started by one woman, who vowed to make a difference in poverty stricken countries while she and her husband were traveling the world. Kelly Weinberger spent the first few years running the company singlehandedly. She quickly discovered she wasn't the only person interested in making a difference, and she built a market for gorgeous handmade items made by these incredible artists. She also helped artists create items that were both trendy and beautiful.

WorldFinds tradeswomen receive fair wages, education, financial and technical assistance, and have safe working conditions, and fair trade organizations focus on building long-term, respectful relationships with each artist. WorldFinds pre-pay 50% for their products upfront and work with each artist on design and quality.

Recently, WorldFinds went a step further and began the Girls Education Fund for smaller, more poverty stricken communities in India. Did you know that 41% of children in India drop out of school before the 8th grade? It is estimated that 61% of young girls drop out of school, and that half of all girls 15 and older are illiterate. The Girls Education Fund provides young girls the opportunity to go to school, and last year, they were able to send three times as many girls to school.

There are over 800 WorldFinds artists in India alone. Not only do they make custom designed merchandise for sale to over 900 retail locations, they also work in groups to better their communities.
