Tips for writing notes to go with flowers

We’ve all been there. You’ve decided what flowers you want to send and call the florist to place your order.

“What would you like on the card?” they ask. And your mind goes blank. The pressure is on to find the perfect words, whether it’s for sympathy or love or friendship, but your mind is completely blank.

One important tip is to write out what you want in advance of placing your order. Don’t just think about it; actually write it down. When deciding on the text for your note, start with the occasion. What are you sending the flowers for and to whom?

If they’re for a somber occasion, such as a funeral, the note should reflect that. An example would be, “Deepest condolences on the loss of your loved one.” Try to keep the focus on their loss and avoid using phrases that contain “I” or “me.”
If they’re for a special occasion or milestone, such as a graduation, be sure to display excitement on the achievement with something like, “Congratulations! You did it! I’m so proud of you and all that you’ve accomplished!” Focus on their achievement and avoid using phrases that talk about what they’re going to do next. You don’t want to add any pressure if they’re unsure of their next step. This moment is all about celebrating.

For the romantic interest in your life, make the note very personal and include an inside joke or reference to something that has special meaning for you both. The note that goes with your flowers is an opportunity to show that you’re paying special attention to that person.

If they enjoy humor, incorporate that as well if it’s a good fit for the occasion. Something like, “Here’s to more night time taco runs, long walks on windy days, and cuddling on the couch with hot chocolate and a cheesy Hallmark movie. Life is so much better with you in it. I love you.”

A more serious love note would be, “Each day with you is a gift that I can’t wait to open. I love you with all that I am and always will. Happy Anniversary.”

No matter what the occasion, always be genuine and authentic. Receiving a beautiful bouquet of flowers is always nice, but it’s even nicer when it comes with a heartfelt note.
