As we near the end of April, I wanted to share something near and dear to my heart. I am sure many of you know April is National Autism Awareness month.
My goddaughter, Katie, has special needs, including autism. In spite of her special needs, and I would even go so far as to say because of her special needs, Katie is a truly incredible and inspirational little girl. She has the most beautiful heart and is loved by everyone who meets her, whether two-legged or four-legged. Katie is a skilled crafter, and she is mostly self-taught. She excels at crocheting, knitting, paracord crafts, cross stitch, loom weaving, rubber band bracelets, and plastic canvas crafts. Not bad for a 13 year old!
In 2010, Katie started making crosses from plastic canvas. Her mother and I showed her a flower pen that was made out of duct tape and Katie took it apart and made it better. She liked it so much, she got some Duct Tape and made a few properly weighted pens for occupational therapy. As Katie said, "I wanted to use pretty pens."
It wasn't long before the orders started rolling in. The next thing you knew, Katie had pens in several metro locations, including Lilygrass, of course. In 2013, Katie's Crafts for Special Needs became a non-profit organization. All proceeds go to help other families of children with special needs, for equipment like wheelchairs, jogging strollers, medical grade wagon, service dog, therapy equipment not covered by insurance, and even helped a family with the purchase of a specially equipped van.
Please give her Facebook page a like at http://on.fb.me/1Jt5743.
You can find Katie's pens in Lilygrass, and she has a booth for all her crafts at The Cottage in Bethany. Go take a look sometime!
Now, on to Teacher Appreciation Week, which is May 4-8, 2015, with Teacher Appreciation Day on May 5. I personally believe teachers should have an entire month dedicated to them, but sadly, I am not in charge. I should be, though! :)
Often, we find ourselves buying teacher themed gifts for the teachers in our lives, but I have it on good authority that one can only have so many apple shaped Scentsy, stationery, magnets, photo frames, coffee mugs, etc. This year, why not give something different? Of course, flowers are always a lovely option, and we at Lilygrass are happy to design a bouquet for that special teacher in your life. Flowers are available in abundance, the colors are bright and beautiful, so feel free to let us create a show stopper for you!
In addition to floral gifts, Lilygrass is a cornucopia of gift ideas. From scarves to handmade cards to hand blown glass flowers to whimsical home décor, we surely have the perfect gift for your child's special teacher. We proudly carry The Naked Bee and WorldFinds items. The Naked Bee is a company started by a husband and wife team who strive to offer a high-quality, natural personal care line that would be affordable to everyone. These items are luxurious and good for you: all items are free of paraben; propylene glycol or mineral oil, dyes or pigment, lauryl or laureth sulfate and are absolutely never tested on animals.
WorldFinds is a company committed to fair trade and empowering women artisans in developing countries. This means with each WorldFinds purchase, you are providing true social change and contributing to the fight against economic crisis and poverty throughout the world, especially as it relates to small and/or disadvantaged producers. All WorldFinds items are handmade by women and girls in impoverished countries. We carry exquisite jewelry, key chains, purses, wallets, make up bags and coin pouches. Please stop in today to see these elegant and tasteful gift items.
No matter how you choose to honor your child's teacher, remember to say thank you. Teaching is a hard job. This week, make someone's day with the gift of a smile. Such a small act, but receiving a genuine smile is always uplifting. Until next week!
