Prom Flowers: How and When to Order

Corsage

Let’s talk about prom!

It’s time to start thinking about dresses, tuxes, limousines and dinner reservations. OH! And flowers! You can’t forget about the flowers!

Traditionally, the guy orders and pays for his date’s flowers and the girl pays for his boutonniere…then each person gifts the flowers to their date. However, more commonly couples/dates will order their flowers together or have one half of the pair place the order for both, ensuring the flowers coordinate. We are happy to offer this to groups of friends going together as well!

What are my options?

At Lilygrass, we pride ourselves in our custom designs! We make every arrangement to order, meaning no two will ever look the same. You get to pick the flowers, ribbon and accessory items that best match your outfit and personal style! Wristlet corsages range from $27.50 to $48.50 depending on the type of bracelet and flowers chosen. Boutonnières range from $12.00 to $15.00, depending on the flower chosen and accessories added.

A new trend within the last couple of years has been for girls to carry small hand-held bouquets (known as nosegays) instead of wearing a wrist corsage. We are happy to help you pick the perfect flowers and accessories for a nosegay. These typically start at $25.00 to $30.00 and go up based on size and flowers chosen.

When to place your order

“How soon should I place my order?” This is one of the most common questions we’re asked.

The answer: The biggest mistake people make is waiting until the last minute! Although florists handle last-minute orders all the time, your flower and color choices will be limited to what is in stock. Translation: fewer choices and higher prices!

We suggest ordering at least a week in advance. If you have a specific request for a particular color or unique flower, call at least two weeks in advance. That way we have ample time to get the exact flowers and colors you want!

Tips and Tricks

When it comes to picking colors, the overall goal is to compliment the outfit. If you have a color swatch or picture of the dress, bring it with you to order! You can either match the flowers to the color of the dress, or go with a neutral colored flower and choose ribbon and accessories to add a splash of that coordinating color back in. In most cases, the boutonnière is made to compliment the corsage with matching flowers and accents.

  • Consider your flowers wearing or carrying jewelry. They should complement both the recipient’s personality and their outfit.
  • Simple elegance is best achieved with a petite corsage or bouquet. The same goes for boutonnieres. Most guys don’t want to wear anything too large or fussy. Keep this in mind when you order prom flowers.
  • Accents like a satin bow, spray-painted flowers, and lace bouquet collars are no longer in-style. Maybe when your parents went to prom… but not today!
  • Ordering flowers for prom should not be your Mom’s job! Selecting your date’s flowers is a personal choice, which is best made by the person who knows your date the best. That person is you – not your Mom.
