As demand for flowers ramps back up due to events like holidays, proms, and graduations to name a few, we’re still navigating flower shortages and shipping delays.
The initial impact last year came from shutdowns and cancellations of weddings, corporate events, and other various in-person gatherings that would generally have people patronizing their local florist to decorate their chosen venue. Bulk deliveries from floral suppliers were impacted during COVID as well, as staff shortages and other logistics meant truckloads of flowers sat waiting and wilting long before they could make it to floral coolers around the country.
Even though floral supplier deliveries, weddings, and other events are beginning to rebound, the flower industry is experiencing a new set of challenges with their supply chains. Staff reductions and quarantine orders around the world that restricted growers months ago are directly impacting the availability of blooms on the market now. As magical as flowers feel sometimes, they don’t actually grow by magic. If growers were unsure of the upcoming demand or were short-staffed and didn’t plant flowers last year, they don’t have flowers to distribute this year.
Despite industry challenges during the pandemic, many floral shops have survived and are optimistically looking toward a rebound in the industry.
