How to keep artificial flowers looking their best

Artificial flower arrangements can be a great way to add color and charm to a home or office space. And there are certainly some pros to artificial flowers compared to real flowers. Artificial flowers don’t need to be watered, they can’t bother someone’s allergies, and they don’t have to be replaced regularly.

At one time, artificial flowers were primarily made from silk, but modern artificial flowers can be made of a wide variety of materials. The best artificial flower arrangements don’t look fake at all, but they do require some cleaning and care to keep them looking their best. After all, everyone will know they’re fake if they’re coated in visible dust! Here are our recommendations for artificial flower care.

Dust them regularly

You may be wondering exactly how to dust an artificial flower arrangement, especially one with delicate petals, but it can be done! Take a clean makeup brush or soft tooth brush and gently dust the petals, leaves, and stems of all flowers. You can use different sizes of brushes to reach all the crevices. You can also use a blow dryer set on the cool setting to gently blow the dust off the flowers.

If the flowers are extremely dusty, we recommend taking the arrangement outside to do this step. But if you regularly dust your artificial flowers, you can easily do so inside without stirring up too much dust.

Clean with water and mild soap

For extremely dusty or dirty arrangements, soap and water may be necessary, although that does require taking apart the arrangement. It’s a good idea to test the soap and water on a small portion of the arrangement first, as not all artificial flowers will respond well to this cleaning method.

Fill a clean sink or large bowl with warm water and add a few drops of mild liquid dish soap. Take the flowers out of the arrangement and swish them in the water a few times. If you’re cleaning a large arrangement and the flower heads are removable, you can remove the flowers from the stems to do this step. Once all flowers have been cleaned, lay them out on clean towels to dry completely.

Once completely dry, reassemble the arrangement. We recommend taking a few quick pictures of the arrangement from multiple angles before you begin cleaning so you have a guide to follow when reassembling.

Try a cleaning spray designed for artificial flowers

If you’re looking for a way to clean your artificial floral arrangements without disassembling them, there are specially made cleaning sprays for artificial flowers. As with the soap and water method, be sure to test an inconspicuous spot first to be sure the spray doesn't damage the specific type of flowers in your arrangement.
